Handmade Lures and Sinkers
(assorted photos at bottom of the page)
As a kid I remember my father pouring his own sinkers and bullets. In order to save a little money on sinkers, I decided to spend a lot on the equipment to make them! After working with the basic sinkers, it went to making the sputniks, and then on to making my own lures. I built a simple fluid bed system to powder coat the jigs and lead inserts. I am still learning and perfecting the process but eventually I will get there. Although it is a lot of work, I find a lot of peace in tinkering with the next creation to be.
Bucktails
Fly tying bucktails can be relaxing and I still have a bit to learn. I wish I could absorb some of my Uncle's fly tying talent.
These are made with real deer tail hair. I never made the connection between deer tail hair and "bucktails" before tying. Sometimes it just has to hit you in the face.
Juke Jigs - homemade gotcha plugs
Juke Jigs. These jigs are very similar to the classic Got-cha plugs that have been widely used for many years. Although the white body with orange or chartreuse head is very popular in NC, an unlimited number of body and head colors can easily be made.
Right now I am trying them out and having others give feedback on colors and how to improve the design. So far I am very happy with how they turned out and I hoping to pick the brains of the old timers for the right design/color combination.
I also wanted to thank Tim C. for inspiring me to build my own lures with his How to Rebuild a Got-cha youtube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Arn97ZkP_Tg
He also has a lot of videos of Seaview Fishing Pier in North Topsail Beach which is one of my favorite places to fish. I just wish I could get out there more often!
Sputnik Sinkers
Sptunik breakaway sinkers are a great way to stick with lighter tackle while having the hold needed for rough surf conditions. The 4oz sputnik uses grip wires to dig in and hold much stronger than your standard 4oz sinker. When it is time to reel in or after a strong strike, the grip wires break away to allow the sinker to easily be reeled like an egg sinker. There is no heavy drag like that created by an 8oz pyramid.
The difference between the store bought and the ones I make is that I include tube keepers that prevent the roll tubes from coming off. I also round the tips of grip wires to help prevent injury in the event one ends up in the surf. The Hurricane sputniks you find in the store are of extremely poor quality which is obvious just by looking at them. There are some better quality ones out there (ebay etc.) so don't let your Hurricane brand experience persuade your view of sputniks.
